using a local bus and colectivo.
- It involves going through the immigration and multiple bus transfers. I would recommend to leave San Cristobal as early as possible. I heard multiple stories that people have trouble when they exit the Mexican border.
San Cristobal to Comitan
You go to colectivo termial. This will take you to Comitan.
Comitan to Ciudad Cuauhtémoc
Once you arrive in Comitan, you take a different collectivo to go to Ciudad Cuauhtemoc. I don’t exactly remember where but you don’t need to go different terminal. It’s the same as where you get off from San Cristobal.
Ciudad Cuauhtémoc to La Mesilla
Once you arrive in Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, you go to the Mexican immigration office to exit Mexico. Note that the immigration officer tries to charge an exit fee, but if you enter Mexico with a flight, the exit fee is already included in the flight. So make sure to print out the payment detail page and show them.
La Mesilla to Huehuetenango
In La Mesilla, you will go to the Guatemala immigration office. Just have a passport and they’ll ask you a few questions. No payment is involved. Then you take the chicken bus to Huehuetenango. It’s a little bit of a walk from the immigration office to the bus terminal. You can take tuk-tuk. Its everywhere.

Huehuetenango to Xela
In Huehuetenango, you take a different chicken bus to Xela. When I dropped off from the bus, it was the other side of the street that the bus going Xela.
Finally, you are in Xela. I was dropped off at a gas station, but later it turned out near the Minerva bus terminal where there are lots of bus going to different part of Guatemala including Late Atitlan
